Climate and resilience are points of attention for producers in 2022
The President Director of Cooxupé, Carlos Augusto Rodrigues de Melo, talks about the perspectives for 17 thousand co-op members
Rodrigues de Melo has stated that coffee farmers must be aware of climate and be resilient in 2022.
The 17 thousand member families produce green Arabica coffee in South and Cerrado in minas Gerais State, and Rio Pardo Valley in São Paulo State.

Amongst the challenges faced last year, the Executive Director highlights the drought, high temperatures and the frost, as well as logistics bottlenecks due to the lack of containers and the reflexes of the pandemic.
“Of course the moment suggests aprehension, because the pandemic isn’t over yet”, he said.
Mr Melo also highlights that the farmers have adequated their processes to the needs imposed by the pandemic.
Harvest and cost of production
Following a series of issues with the weather last year, Mr. Melo says there will always be challenges for coffee producers, though they are used to overcoming.
“For 2022, amidst the points of attention, the producers must keep na eye on climate matters. We’ve been expecting a record harvest, which won’t happen”, he ponders.
In addition, according to the President Director, there are also lack of ag defensives and rise in costs of production.
“That’s why coffee growers have to plan well for 2022. At Cooxupé, we’ve been working hard in order to bring this scenario to the producers.”
Yet for the Co-op, the major challenges for 2022 first semester are still shipping and logistics.
“Normalization is needed in order to avoid major gaps in inflows and outflows of coffee”, says Mr. Melo.
The President Director emphasizes that resilience will be key for growers this year. He said good opportunities have been given by the market, and coffee growers must be reasonable and resilient.
The Co-op is structured to support members taking care of the great patrimony: their crops, by protecting their costs of production, acquiring good quality inputs, and ensuring liquidity for they may have good profitability.
“Hope is a characteristic of Brazilian famers. It’s necessary to realize what was left behind, and understand what will be reflected in the future”, Mr. Melo concludes.
